One more bird flu fatality in China as number of contaminated grows to 95

China documented a different death and 4 new bacterial infections from a new strain of bird flu on Weekend, increasing the death toll to EIGHTEEN, , the official Xinhua News Agency said. The H7N9 virus has been identified in 95 people, mostly in eastern China.

The most recent victim is a 69-year old man surnamed Xu from Zhejiang province who passed away Friday night after emergency treatment failed, Xinhua said. Zhejiang province reported three new infection cases with all three patients in critical situation.

The actual eastern costal province of Jiangsu also reported another bird flu infection. On Friday health officials raised questions about the source of this strain of bird flu indicating that more than half of patients had no contact with bulgaria.

Although it is not clear how people are becoming infected, the World Health Organisation (WHO) says there is no evidence of the most worrying scenario - sustained transmission among people.

The WHO's China consultant, Michael O'Leary, released data on Monday showing that half of the cases analysed had no identified contact with poultry, the most obvious potential source, however he said it appeared human-to-human transmission was rare. China announced the first case of human infection of the H7N9 in late March and has since has been praised by the WHO for its managing of the condition.
